Great topic!!
Black Lotus showing again why she's amazing ✨
Here is my vote for her running the forums too 💜

I'm in the process of learning needles, something I wanted to do for the longest time.

I approach the topic with high respect because
it's a high risk practice that requires lots of technical and medical knowledge.
I've been reading for the longest time, and I've seen plenty video tutorials, but I knew I wanted in-person training from experienced kinksters before trying my hand.

First I got 2 lovely queens to do needles on me, so I could learn first hand how it feels and how it's supposed to feel when done right (it helps I'm also a masochist 🤭)

It also gave me first hand experience on how does the post-play care look like and how the healing process goes, and how does it feel when, as a bottom, your blood pressure drops during play 😂 (also fun thing to learn about myself - despite my massive blood kink, and not experiencing fear, sometimes my body reacts in this unexpected way)

Then I bought my own equipment and paid for online classes by the most respected educators in the topic (Reign of blood, they have an amazing patreon with content and host online classes by different educators) and from there I moved into practicing on myself.
I also follow blogs on Fetlife and other socials of experienced needle players.

I'm big on safety, risk management and informed risk profiles, so it shocked me how little info there is about some fuckup scenarios, like what to do when a needle that's currently through your bottom's skin pierces you (you need special equipment to remove the plastic cap and make the needle go out without the tip passing through the skin again), and how little emphasis there is on that specific risk of your blood getting into the bottom, not only protecting you as a top from the bottom's blood. Just like trauma scissors are mandatory for a shibari top, shouldn't these tweezers be a basic part of a needle play kit, along with sharps disposal?

I also found a very detailed article about the many types of disinfectants there are, and how to negotiate with your bottom which one to use for their own health needs and risk profile, both before and after play.

Both the accidental needle poke and disinfectant choice articles happened to be uncommon knowledge that I only ran into recently, so it makes me wonder how good are we all about safety information and informing ourselves.

So far I'm only practicing on myself, but if I were to do needles on someone else, I would need a very long negotiation to make sure they are as informed as I am and they can make their own choices before play.

I understood how important informed consent is, because there are very real health risks in this practice, like in many other kink activities.

Learning is truly a humbling experience, and as someone else said before, requires you put down your ego in order to grow. Otherwise, you won't be able to admit to yourself how much is there that you don't know.

My next steps will probably be more advanced online classes and practice on myself, and discussing risk management with fellow practicing kinksters, now that I know what questions to ask.

Overall, to add to this lovely discussion, I feel it's important to put aside our own excitement and arousal during the learning process, because rushing into things with horny brain can have very real consequences that we might not be able to anticipate or even imagine.
And even if we feel we have reached expert level in something, remember we can always fuck up in new, unexpected ways, and be humble enough to take accountability and manage the consequences.
