In view of recent events- 'F*****g Jews... The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world... Are you a Jew?' by Mel Gibson, the question that bothered so many people, including myself, upon the release of Gibson's "Passion of the Christ" has finally and definitively been answered. Mel Gibson is an anti-Semite. When the movie was released, many people immediately attacked it as anti-Semitic. I was not one of them. I decided to give Mr. Gibson the benefit of the doubt. After viewing the film, which is a phenomenal artistic accomplishment, I did feel that he was portraying the Jews in a very unflattering, if not downright hateful, light. Nevertheless, I took at face value Mr. Gibson's statements that this movie was about his need to put the story of Jesus' betrayal and crucifixion on film, and that he was only portraying what was written in the Four Gospels. In my heart I was trying to avoid comparison to the 1934 performance of the Oberammergau passion play in Bavaria, which Hitler called "a convincing portrayal of the menace of Jewry." I also tried to distance Mel Gibson from his father, Hutton Gibson, renowned anti-Pope and Holocaust denier. However, it saddens me to inform you all that I was wrong. And I hate to be wrong. I also hate the fact that such a goodt actor, a terrific director and producer decided to use his talents to inflame the rising anti-Semitism in Europe and the Middle East. On the other hand, I am pleased to be able to say that despite this attempt, very little effect was had on the American community--aside from a few incidents in the South and in Denver. God Bless America. And may the time soon come when racial slurs and anti-Semitic remarks will no longer be tolerated anywhere in the world. Amen.
