I always thought the basic assumption of people who think about entering a BDSM relationship together is that there is a mutual premise: the dom wants to dominate and the sub wants to be subdued.

It can come on as many different colors as the rainbow, but the will to fulfil oneself in one's BDSM role precedes, in my mind, any other stage.

Then it comes down to chemistry.
