If one is on a long journey on foot at a fairly constant pace, one will make a day’s progress every day, and hour’s progress every hour, even if one does not know the distance of the destination. Obviously one will feel a variety of things during the journey, based on temperature, time of day, scenery, smells and thousands of other factors. And patently these changing feelings have nothing to do with the progress of the journey.
Odd then, to be surprised by the thousand fleeting feelings one undergoes on a different kind of journey and spend so much time and energy trying to figure out what they mean. The ones that are significant will make themselves understood in due time.
