Hi Mike,
I hope you’re enjoying the live events and all the Pizza that goes with it.
A plate shattered in my hands on Sunday, making a cut near the base of the middle finger of my picking hand, and tearing a nerve there which left the finger numb, yet movable.
Yesterday i’ve undergone surgery to repair the damaged nerve. I’m gonna be in a cast for three weeks.
I was wondering if you’d have some advice on how to practice in the meantime, besides the obvious ear training, music theory, video watching etc.
Here’s a short video showing what i’m able to do now:

Hey Dan,
Sorry about your hand injury - hope the cast comes off soon and you make a full recovery!
One thing you can work on easily is fretboard knowledge. Practice creating scale sequences (with a clean tone, since you can't palm mute), finding the scale degrees inside scale shapes (for example, play the 7 shapes of the major scale and pay attention to where scale degree 1 happens in each of the 7 shapes.) For example, accent the 1 harder with the pick.
Then, do the same thing and find all the spots where the 2 scale degree is (accenting it harder with the pick). Then do the same for scale degree 3, etc.
This way you'll train your musical memory of knowing where the specific scale degrees fall inside each scale shape.
Another thing to do is work on your legato, slides, bending, phrasing and vibrato (since you can use your fretting hand).
You can ask Tom Hess for a lesson specifically on variations involving these techniques. Then take a 3-4 note lick and practice squeezing as much emotion as you can out of those notes, using just the above phrasing elements.
Give that a try (on top of the other things you mentioned) and it should keep you busy - making you a better player for when the cast comes off.
Hi Tom Hess,
I hope you’re enjoying the live events, It certainly looks like a blast from the pics on FB.

On Wednesday I’ve undergone surgery to repair the damaged nerve. I’m gonna be in a cast for three weeks.
At first I thought I could still pick to some extent as my thumb and index finger are out of the cast, but turns out even holding a spoon full of yogurt causes some neural pain, like an electric current, so it’s probably best to just let the hand be at the moment.
I’ve got a new lesson coming up in a couple of days and would appreciate it if it would include mainly theoretical stuff I can practice without the guitar.
Thanks,
Dan 🎸 🖤
