Now it is time to prepare the leather for the tails and braiding (if you don't want to braid the handle there is an option to skip that bit and make a plain simple flogger).

Cut plenty of strips about 1/2" (13mm) wide for the tails (if you want a heavier flogger use leather boot laces here instead and skip these 1/2" strips). If you only have small squares of leather, cut them diagonally, this will increase the length of the strips considerably.

Now cut more strips. These are for the braiding, they can be the same size as the tail strips that you have just cut, but the thinner you cut them the finer the braiding will look on completion. About 1/4" (7mm) works best.

Do not cut your fingers off with the knife, this will seriously impede your braiding later on where fingers are needed!
