When my brother was younger and far less devout, he would buy trading cards at the local comic book shop.
Many of these cards depicted fearless swordsmen slaying monsters and rescuing scantily clad maidens. (We were both heavy into Dungeons & Dragons at the time.)
Others, however, featured the erotic artwork of Olivia De Berardinis.
It was through these Olivia illustrations that I first discovered Bettie Page, bondage pin-up of the 1950s and starlet of Irving Klaw’s underground films.

Page – with her jet-black bangs, curvy curves and ruby smile – smoldered in front of the camera and gained notoriety even in the vanilla world.
But there was another reason for her icon status: She always looked cheerfully innocent, whether being trussed up or wielding a whip.
In fact, Page seemed to treat her BDSM scenes like a game and played both dominatrix and hapless victim in Klaw’s movies.
