I love Cake. Yes, they are the ultimate nerd-rock band. But I don’t care. Their lyrics are clever and unpredictable. Take, for example, this stanza from “The Distance”:
No trophy, no flowers, no flashbulbs, no wine,
He's haunted by something he cannot define.
Bowel-shaking earthquakes of doubt and remorse,
Assail him, impale him with monster-truck force.
Also, Cake covers truly unusual topics (classical composers, the economics of rock n’ roll, etc.), but even when they sing about girls and romance, the songs sound like this:
